Rebecca Layton returns to her beachside hometown of Sunnyville, California, determined to explore the possibility of rekindling her past relationship with the love of her life, Raymond Colton. She's devastated to discover that he has moved on and is now engaged.

Raymond Colton harbors resentment towards Rebecca for abandoning him to pursue her dreams of life in the big city. Now she's back and more beautiful than ever. But Raymond's heart has been broken more than once and risking more heartache with Rebecca isn't a gamble he's willing to take.

When Rebecca agrees to use her marketing expertise to help Raymond's father salvage his failing family business--Colton's Ice Creamery--she and Raymond are thrown together, and old flames are ignited. Can they heal the wounds from their past and embrace the possibility of a brighter tomorrow?

Excerpt

“Hello, Raymond.” Memories and regrets flood through me as I take in his smooth, brown skin and the faded scar across the bridge of his nose from a bicycle fall. Clasping my hands, I force myself not to fiddle with them since he and I both know it’s a dead give-away that I’m nervous, guilty or, most likely, both. “How are you?”

“What are you doing here?” The familiar voice is deep and steady with a coldness that rattles my determination to confront the mistakes of the past.

Does he think I don’t belong in my hometown because I went away to college and didn’t immediately return after graduation? “This is still my home.” Straightening my shoulders, I resolve not to allow Raymond to intimidate me the way he did his opponents on the football field. With a sinking sensation, I know that returning to Sunnyville with expectations of re-igniting a past passion with him may never happen, but I’m not going to slink away like a frightened child. I have questions that need answers—if not now, then later.

“We didn’t see you for two summers.” He spews out the bitter words as he avoids looking at me. “Guess you were too busy with your big-city life.”

“We need to talk.” I hold my hands out, squelching the apprehension surging through me as if I’m about to jump off the diving board into the deep end of a pool, unable to swim and without a life vest.

“I’m busy.” Shrugging his broad shoulders, he abruptly stands and heads to the sink. Grabbing a cloth, he swipes the clean counter.

“Really?” I scan the almost-empty creamery and place my hands on my hips. “It doesn’t appear to be overflowing with customers.”

“Looks can be deceiving, can’t they?” A muscle twitches along his strong jawline. “You see things one way and I see something different.” He nods toward the door as if signaling that it’s time for me to leave. “I’ve got a business to run.”

“Raymond.” I stand and hesitantly make my way toward him, then tentatively reach out until I’m almost touching his arm before I think better of it and drop my hand to my side. “I’d like it if we could…”

“What?” He steps back, his eyes utterly devoid of any emotion as if he’s speaking to a stranger. “You made yourself very clear the last time you were here.” He curls his upper lip and scowls at me. “You said you didn’t feel as if you belonged here. That it no longer felt like home.”

“Oh dear,” exclaims the elderly woman eating in the back loudly. I had forgotten she was there and, when I glance in her direction, bright green eyes twinkle encouragingly back at me.

“It’s more complicated than that.” Exasperated, I refocus on Raymond while fighting the tightness in my chest. “And you know it.”

“As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing left to say.” With several long strides, he heads through the back door of the shop. “Good-bye, Rebecca,” he calls out as he disappears from sight. As usual, he looks as good going as he does coming.

My stomach coils tight as a sailor’s knot. Why had I deluded myself into believing that speaking with Raymond about our past was going to be easy? I drop my head and remember it’s not the first time reality has demolished my fantasies. How many birthdays had I spent expecting to see my father burst through the front door, pick me up in his arms, and swing me around before promising that he’d never leave again? More times than I can count. I should know better, but, observing Raymond as he walks away, I know that tenaciousness and hard work produce positive results in business, but they might not do so in love. I need to get out of here before I embarrass myself even more.

As I pass the lone customer, she places her spoon onto the table by her bowl, dabs a paper napkin against her lips, then, quickly rises from her chair to follow me outside.

 About the Author

After years of not pursuing my writing dreams, I decided it was time to stop sitting on the sidelines of my publishing aspirations. In 2019, I contracted with The Wild Rose Press for a three-book series, California Hearts. The release date for my debut novel, Orange Blossoms-Love Blooms, is October 19, 2020. My novella, A Whirl With My Mocha Chocolate Swirl is part of The Wild Rose Press’ s One Scoop or Two series and will be released in September 9, 2020.

I write contemporary romance and women’s fiction with emotion-driven characters and unexpected plot twists and turns. The character’s journeys are layered with heart and soul and reflect the diversity of the world around me. My stories center around love, families, friendships, following your passion, second chances, and overcoming obstacles.

When I’m not busy plotting my next novel, you will find me bike riding along with one of Southern, California’s scenic beaches with my husband or discussing love, life, and the mysteries of the universe with my daughter.

EXCERPT:

“This is a surprise,” he said, nuzzling his nose over her neck.

“I’ll say. A bid for Congress, who knew?” Phoenix said.

“We only started putting the team together. Do you think it’s a bad idea?”

“No, I think you’d be brilliant at it. Just surprised. You haven’t mentioned it since that night.” She let the part about him being a complete asshole be implied. To his credit, he didn’t back down.

“I always meant to get into politics eventually.”

Robin raised his head to meet her eyes, she saw heat and desire, and just the barest hint of vulnerability. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a light kiss on the lips. “It makes sense.” And it did, only Phoenix dreaded what it would mean when he was living on the East Coast and she was back to living in L.A. most of the time.

But maybe she was thinking too far ahead. The election wouldn’t be for another year. It was anybody’s guess what would happen between then and now. And Phoenix hadn’t even told him about the baby yet. She’d had half a mind to do it now, to ply him with roast beef and spicy pickles and tell him he was going to be a father and that despite all the bullshit they were wading through now, she was excited—ecstatic even. Their nursery theme was going to be gender neutral. Whales, she’d already decided, but she would let him suggest names if he wanted.

Instead, Robin pressed Phoenix into the door with his body as his lips brushed over her jaw. “Did you have urgent business or . . .?” he asked, and she could hear the plea in his voice that told her he just needed a break. Which was fine. They had plenty of time to talk about the baby.

“I missed you, but I can probably come up with something if you’d like to work.”

“I’d rather not,” Robin’s voice was gruff, hard.

“Good, because I’ve always wanted to go down on you in your office.” Then she pulled him in for a hard kiss.

Robin sighed against her lips, brushing his tongue out to meet hers as his hands landed on her hips and squeezed. Phoenix managed to shove him out of his jacket. Then, with a rub of her cheek over his bearded chin, she grasped his tie and pulled him around his desk and pushed him back into his leather desk chair.

He grinned as she leaned over him. “Are you feeling bossy today?”

“I’m feeling bossy every day, Birch.” She kissed him once more, then concentrated her attention on his fly. His suit was a light gray today, made out of a breathable fabric that was soft and cool beneath Phoenix’s fingertips as she traced the ridge behind his zipper.

He's the best man. Both are harboring secrets that could break a potential future relationship if they both keep avoiding telling the truth.

Can they reveal those secrets to each other? And if so, can they get past the withheld truths to plan a future together?

Excerpt

Jillie glanced up from the pot of chili and froze. The back door softly closed, and Mack pushed into the mudroom. She watched as he parked his hat on the bench beside the back door and hung his coat next to hers in the closet, then strolled into the kitchen.

This feels a little too cozy. “What the hell?” she said. “I thought you’d gone.”

He tossed her a sarcastic grin as he approached the kitchen island. “Nope. I’m here. At least for the night. Guess we both need to get used to it.”

“Why?”

“Weather and other stuff.”

“Is it that bad?”

He ignored her. “Did you get a nap?”

“Yes.”

“Good. By the way, I’m still on babysitting duty,” he added.

“Oh my God, Mack, I can manage.” Jillie bristled and narrowed her gaze. “I don’t need a sitter.”

“I’m still here anyway.”

“Well that’s ridiculous.” She turned back to the chili. But the smirky smile he gave her right before she did—one that half crossed over into dangerous sexy waters—unnerved her a bit. Flustered, Jillie dropped the ladle into the chili. The hot soup splashed onto the back of her hand and she jerked away. “Crap. Ouch!”

She snagged Mack’s gaze as he stepped forward. His intense glare unnerved her so much that she didn’t see him reaching for her hand.

“You lost the spoon,” Mack said. His fingers were still cold from working outside. He lightly touched a knuckle. “You okay? Those knuckles look red already.”

And they stung. She pulled back sharply, but not completely out of his grasp. “Um. Yeah. I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.” He tugged her closer, his blue eyes dancing. She locked into his gaze and he held her there for a few seconds, while her heart did a little flip-flop. Leaning in, he lifted her hand to his lips, and licked off the chili spatter off.

One. Knuckle. At. A. Time.

Mesmerized by the action, all Jillie could do was stand there and let him. His tongue dragging over her skin sent a revolving skitter of desire through her body and jump-started the months-buried yearning for him in her heart—and elsewhere. Every delicate nerve ending connected to her hands tingled with anticipation. Where else might he lick?

Her lips?

Neck?

Um…?

Stunned at the heat of his touch, Jillie attempted to stifle the shiver racing up her spine and keep her hand from shaking. She wasn’t successful. After what seemed a suspended moment in time, he stopped, and his gaze drifted up to meet hers.

Those blue eyes twinkled back. She trembled a little inside while her tongue made a quick swipe over her suddenly parched lower lip. Mack’s gaze immediately dropped to her mouth, and she willed down the flipping butterflies in her stomach.

She stepped back and jerked her hand away.

What can I say about this book?
First off let me sip my hot tea! I love this read because it kept my attention from chapter one. I love how the author had each of the main characters in their own chapter so we as readers can get their viewpoints. I know it got to be hard for Shawn to play the best husband and father while hiding each woman from each other. He did and always had a good excuse as to why he got to go "work" to be with Kim. lol. This was a great story with all the secrets and the twist and turn. If there is a part two I would love to read it.
